Before I start off, Three 6 Mafia is not for the faint of heart. Like many other reviewers have said, the Three 6 Mafia has established their name through their truly explicit lyrics. They use their right to speech to the fullest amount.
Now this album is in my opinion one of the best if not the best. I am a true hardcore Three 6 fan and I have heard and possess all their underground stuff. In that respect you cannot compare their underground stuff to this album. They are in essence two quite distinct sounds. Yet what remains is the fact that their style has not changed to this point. You will still find the roots of their old undergound stuff in this album. If you cannot hear it then you need to hear their underground stuff again. When The Smoke Clears is an album of a new emergence. Given that the material on the new album is slightly geared to a more widespread audience, it still is Three 6. The reality remains that many people still do not know who Three 6 Mafia is so in that repsect I still say that Three 6 is not commercial by any means. If you want a commercial sound go listen to Ja Rule or even better, Puff Daddy. Nothing against them but they are not true artists in my sense. Sure this album went platinum, but they did it using the same ingredients they did with other albums. They essentially will always be the same, no matter how many platinums sold.
Profile: American hip-hop group from Memphis, Tennessee. Established 1991 in Memphis with DJ Paul (3) (Paul Beauregard), Juicy J (Jordan Houston) and Lord Infamous (Ricky Dunigan). The original name for the hip hop group was 'Backyard Posse', followed shortly after by 'Triple Six Mafia' and they originally did 'horrorcore' music.
Now on to the music: 3) Sippin On Some Syrup is my favorite jam(no suprise). This song keeps my head nodding foever and is in my opinion the best track. This was a good track to start with. Good beats and use of guitar. 4) The beat continues with Weak A** B****. This track makes you keep reiterating the chorus and again good use of the 808, it is a solid track. 5) Jus Like Us is a decent track and takes a little getting used to. 6) I'm So Hi was a track that I was dissapointed with. The track was too out or order with the opening songs and the chorus was annoying. 7) Mafia Ni**** was another good track to bounce back from the previous track. This track was decent and got the job done. I liked the constant echoing of 'Mafia!!!'. 9) From Da Back was another decent track kind of annoying. But I think at this point the CD picks up. 10)& 11) F**k All Ya'll Hoes and Where Da Cheese At are both very good tracks. The CD was slowing down but with these track again I found my head bumping to the beats. Both with very solid beats with good hooks and sync beats. 12), 13) & 14) These tracks were decent at best, but still listenable. I often found myself skipping through these tracks because they just did not sound that good. These are the last tracks that are decent, from this point out the rest of the songs are very good. 15) Act Like You Know'em was a good track that features Big Gipp of the Goodie Mobb. This track definately got my head noddin and the chorus is very tempting to repeat to yourself. Good beat, solid chorus, good raps make this song a favorite. 16) Take A Bump was probably my second most liked track. Though the song was short I found myself repeating this one. It has a different approach to the beat and Lord Infamous rips off on this one. 17) Touched Wit It is a nice jam featuring Fiend. At first it took me a while to get used to the beat, but after awhile I really began to like it. Of course La Chat delivers well on this one. Again a dissimilar approach to the beat, but nontheless very good. Only thing I still cannot like to this day is Fiend's 'barking' in the song. 18) M.E.M.P.H.I.S. is just straight up banging. No words for this one. The song features the entire posse. 19) Just Anotha Crazy Click is a ode to their old grimy, hardcore sound. A very good track with a feature from ICP. This was quite the tag-team on this track and it worked out great. 20) Who Run It is probably rivaled to my second most liked track and it is just like M.E.M.P.H.I.S., straight up banging. All the emcees give good raps in this one. 21) The last track Put Ya Signs Up is a solid exit track and again has you repeating the chrous. A very complete ending for this CD.
